Top 30 Chart Update, 7/9/13: Wise Blood debuts at #1

Hi everyone! Another week gone by, another incredible bunch of new records to play on the radio! We’ve just officially submitted our stationwide Top 30 most-played albums chart to CMJ, and it’s solid gold from top to bottom, with many holdovers from last week as well as several impressive debuts. Vampire Weekend, Daft Punk, Dungeonesse, and Portugal. The Man are finally beginning to cool off here after an impressive streak, but that’s relative of course — only Portugal. The Man’s Evil Friends has dipped out of the Top 10. Last week’s chart-toppers, Lorde’s The Love Club and Disclosure’s Settle, remain high performers in the #2 and #3 positions, respectively, Smith Westerns have risen to #4, and Lightning Dust move up to #9. But what’s most exciting are the new albums that have debuted in our Top 10. At #10 is San Fermin’s self-titled EP, which is only four songs long but glorious throughout — widescreen, shambling, ecstatic indie rock with an early-2000s vibe, RIYL Broken Social Scene and early Arcade Fire. Mood Rings‘ charmingly lo-fi pop-rock currently ranks at #7. And our #1 album of the week, as many DJs and listeners predicted, is Wise Blood’s fantastic first full-length, id. If you’ve not heard it yet, you’ve got to — tuning into WRMC at any given hour is a good way to hear a track or two, wink wink nudge nudge TUNE IN! id is a mixture of lightly psychedelic pop, laid-back rap, and a samples-first compositional approach, with a bit of a heady cloud-rap twist — a really satisfying collision of genres that plays out like the no-good delinquent younger brother of chillwave. RIYL Beck, WHY?, Animal Collective, Avalanches, Beastie Boys, Kitty Pryde.
There’s good stuff beyond the Top 10 too, of course. Vermont band King Tuff’s reissued debut Was Dead is #14, just ahead of foreboding country crooner Daughn Gibson’s muscular sophomore effort Me Moan and Hooded Fang’s Gravez — a record your Summer Manager is thrilled to see chart, as it seems weirdly underrated. Listen to Hooded Fang if you like your bratty, wasted garage rock intricately arranged and produced with nuance! The fourth soundtrack for the terrible, terrible, terrible, sexy HBO series True Blood has received a lot of play due to contributions from WRMC favorites like Best Coast, Iggy Pop, Warpaint, Alabama Shakes, and the Flaming Lips. Longtime soul/funk/blues/R&B stalwart Booker T.’s latest, Sound The Alarm, charted this week in anticipation of his upcoming show at Signal Kitchen in Burlington. Outre hip-hop group Serengeti’s Kenny Dennis EP snuck in at the bottom, delivering our much-needed summer dose of anticon. weirdness. The left-fielder this week is Moon Hooch’s Moon Hooch. if “hooch” sounds to you like something you’d drink in a 1920s speakeasy, you’re on the right track — now just imagine that speakeasy on the moon! Can’t say this craaaaazy brass band isn’t aptly named!
