I and WRMC’s creative directors Moss and Alan spent yesterday at Phono Del Sol Music and Food Festival. The Bay Bridged & Tiny Telephone gathered a bunch of bands to play at two stages in the Mission District’s Portero Del Sol park. The venue was great for two reasons: awesome people watching and great seating. The two stages were divided by a large hill that divided the park into different sloped areas, which meant that sitting at any area of the park gave you a great survey of the crowds that gathered to see bands play. La Raza skatepark was also situated adjacent to the stages so you could watch skaters either do really cool stuff or wipe out. The seating was great because you could either sprawl in the sun, lie in the shade, or stand with the crowds by the stage. The festival started at 1 and ended at 6:30, drawing a large but mellow crowd by 5. Everyone sat sprawled on the grass in the beginning of the festival but by the time headliners Yacht and Thee Oh Sees came on masses were crowding together to watch great live music.
blouse+social studies+painted palms: these three bands played in the early time slots and kicked off the festival really well. I had never listened to these bands before but really liked a lot of theirsounds. “Into Black” was probably my favorite song from Blouse’s concert. The group really reminded me of Arbutus Records’ TOPS. The lead singer’s alto voice went really well with the band’s garage punk instrumentals. Social Studies’ pop-rock sounds and Painted Palms’ synthey beats and guitar melodies created steady relaxing vibes.
thee oh sees+yacht: I watched Thee Oh Sees perform a kick ass live show while eating one of the best burgers in my life. The crowds got pretty rowdy towards the end of their set and by the last song the crowd had charged the stage. Yacht was a lot of fun to watch; the lead singer’ poetic lyrics and conversational singing strangely reminded me a lot of Patti Smith. Their were also a lot of entertaining visuals of different cartoon figures popping up on screens around the stage. Both bands played great shows.
