The Man Posting About Geese Will Not Provide for You

If you surround yourself with the same weirdos and music nerds as me then you have heard a thing or two recently about this band Geese. Especially since their release of their last album “Getting Killed” they have been all over, and hey I get it. New band on the block who seems cool and indie, and you don’t want to be late to the station for the hype train but I feel as if I need to reiterate some things I’ve been thinking about. RELAX.
Ever since the frontman Cameron Winter has sported some John Lennon glasses it’s as if people in the music community have decided he is the second coming of Christ. Whether you are a super fan or have no idea what I’m talking about, let me explain my theory about the meteoric rise of Geese, and any qualms I have with the band.
Ok, sonically speaking, the band is good. I’ll admit it they grew on me, they have very good writing and catchy choruses on songs like Cobra and Taxes. But I think their decently established sound has been over hyped. I mean look at a band like Black Country New Road. They had their moment in Ants from Up Therewith a similar style of writing and music but not nearly as hyped as Geese. I think the main reason for this is what I’m dubbing as the Social Media Indie Rock Hype Echo Chamber (Patent Pending) . What I mean by this is; people who are in a music community online or socially are capitalizing on Geese’s rise to score social points.
Look, no one likes to be late. I started listening to Bladee in 2020 and I still have people calling me a new gen. Music fans (like myself) love to say “Yeah I was on (insert artist) before they got super big”. We all do it whether we like it or not as a sort of badge of honor or a “humble brag”. My theory is at this point, Geese fans are trapped in a cycle of this. I propose the idea that; your average Geese fan isn’t as much of a fan as they say they are, they just want to be able to say in the future that they were really into them before they were cool, and because so many people have done this, Geese has reached a high degree of indie fame. I have little to no evidence of this being the case except for the many many many conversations I’ve had in the last few months with my WRMC friends that all sound like this: “hey have you heard of this band Geese? Yeah they just dropped an album, it was pretty good but I like their old stuff more, yeah, I saw them in concert in Burlington and it was life changing”. If seeing Cameron Winter live was life changing you don’t need to tell me all about it, you need therapy. You need to look deep into your heart and ask yourself “Do I really like this band THAT much where I’m going to recommend it to everyone who’s willing to listen?”. I venture to say, no. Geese is good, but not that good. The person you have a crush on who keeps posting about Geese on their story is not your soulmate, they are stuck in the same delusion as you. I implore you to reconsider if you like this band because they are trendy and hip or because you enjoy Cameron Winter’s sub-par Vibrato, also reconsider recommending it to me, because I am so gosh darn sick and tired about hearing about this band.
Thank you
